“Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevayah”
Dear devotees, one of the greatest puzzles many devotees have about the number of wives of Bhagvan Shri Krishna. Many say he had 16108 wives. This number is one of the fact been used by Anti Hindu missionaries to target and Hinduism and confuse Hindus.
It is very obvious for any normal person to be confused. But we all must understand that there are so many different facts included which when written in one line excluding other details create confusion. Here I’d try to break the facts up to let everybody understand.
Lord Vishnu has one and only one Companion:
Before trying to know anything about Lord Shri Krishna and his wives. We have to know that Lord Shri Krishna who is the 8th Incarnation of Lord Shri Vishnu has one and only one companion and that is Godess Adi Laxmi.
The complexity of Incarnation
The second fact which we all should try to understand that the Incarnation of Lord Shri Vishnu on earth is not a normal phenomenon, but includes events of thousands of years. The phenomena of taking human form are an exceptionally rare phenomena and god never do this unless it is very necessary to do so. One Incarnation of Lord fulfils the dreams of thousands and thousands of devotees who keep praying for him birth after, birth. Also devotees want to see him in different way, somebody as friend, somebody as master, somebody as son and yet somebody as lover or husbands.
Merciful Lord tries to fulfill the wishes of as many devotees as possible. Such multitude of events creates a very complex combination which appears very mystic to us human.
8 real wives of Bhagvan Shri Krishna
1.Rukmini, 2.Satyabhama, 3. Jambavati, 4.Kalindi, 5.Mitravrinda, 6.Nagnajiti, 7.Bhadra and 8.Lakshana.
Maha Laxmi incarnated in 8 forms:
The Incarnation of Bhagvatn Shri Krishna was the complete incarnation. He appeared will all 6 laxnas and 16 Gunas.
To accompany him, Shri Maha Lamxi which has 8 attributes and so also called as Astha Laxmi appeared on earth with all 8 attributes embodied into 8 different forms.
The 8 attributes of Shi Adi Lamxi are as follows:
1.Adi Lakshmi (The primal mother goddess),
2. Dhanalakshm (One who showers wealth),
3. Dhanyalakshmi (Food – one who eliminates hunger),
4. Gajalakshmi (Power and Strength),
5. Santan Lakshmi (Children),
6. Veera Lakshmi (Courage and Strength),
7. Vijaya Lakshmi (Victory),
8. Vidya Lakshmi (Wisdom and knowledge)
These 8 incarnations of Shri Maha Laxmi are what known as 8 wives of Bhagvan Shri Krishna(Listed above).
But all of us should know that Bhagvan Shri Vishnu have one and only one companion always. How they appear in physical form is complete dependent upon the situation and demand of particular incarnation of Lord.
As we all know manifestation is one of the cores of the creation. This whole universe is created on same principle of manifestation.
8 Forms of Godess Laxmi same as 9 Forms of Durga:
Manifestation of Godess Laxmi taking 8 forms is not a single phenomenon. As we all know Godess Durga appered in 9 forms which we all worship during Navaratri.
What about these 16108 Wives then?
Lord Shri Krishna had 8 wives, all of them were the different incarnation of Shri Maha Laxmi,. But then people get confused about this number 16108 wives. If we take out 8 of them, they are still 16100 which is a very big number.
As many of us might already know that 16100 ladies were not his real wives, but the ladies who were the hostages of Narakasura.
Narakasura and his kingdom, Pragjyotisha. If people can further recall his son, Bhagadatta, is fought for the Kauravas in the Mahabharata battle.
Narakassura was the son of Bhudevi and arranged lot of powers from the boon given by Lord Bramha. Over the year mad in powers he unleashed suffering on public. As a worst atrocities he captured 16100 women as his slave.
Unable to bear the tyranny of the demon, the celestial beings pleaded with Lord Krishna to save them from his torture.
But Naraka had a boon that he would face death only at the hands of his mother Bhudevi. So, Krishna asks his wife Sathyabhama, also incorporating the assense of Bhudevi, to be his charioteer in the battle with Naraka. When Krishna fell unconscious after being hit by an arrow of Naraka, Sathyabhama takes the bow and aims the arrow at Naraka, killing him instantly.
After Narakasura killed, 16100 women were freed. But even after being freed the sufferings of those ladies who was of all age groups did not end. As per the then social situation, they had nowhere to go. They were all left with just one option to commit suicide.
This leads to a unprecedented social dilemma. On the request o fall those ladies and to give them new lives Lord Shri Krishna accepted them and given them shelter.
Connection for earlier Incarnation
Another storyline which relates to this even goes back to earlier incarnation of Lord Shri Vishnu as Lord Shri Ram.
Everybody knows Lord Ram(and Lord Shri krsihna) being extremely handsome, containing all the available beauty of the universe. When Lord Ram and Laxman went to Janakpuri, the whole city was following them just to have a glimpse of them. This has been described in Ramayan and all other scriptures in detail. Many ladies from Janakpuri and Ayodhya developed this deep desire to have Lord Ram as companion. Many of those ladies worshiped throughout very hard for this. Lord Shri Ram accepted their pure wishes based upon the purity of their devotion. They have been promised for their wish to be fulfilled in next incarnation
Those Ladies who were accepted as wives by Lord Shri Krishna were the same ladies who desired Bhagvan Ram as their companion. Their wishes were fulfilled when Lord Shri Vishnu came back as Lord Shri Krishna.
I hope this discussion will help removing the confusion of devotees on this subject. Here I would like to request once again that Incarnation of Lord Vishnu is very complex phenomenon. It incorporates thousands of events happening for thousands of years. Many of the acts done of Lord are to fulfill the wishes of devotees in one way or other. Since we do not know the complete line of evens hence we develop confusion.
Please try to know that not even a single act of Lord is without any reason.
